Story:

This is something that a friend of mine gave me as a gift. It was at the end of the feminist seminar during our PhD, the only seminar that was collecting feminist practitioners from various disciplines. By the end of it, we were having coffee every single week for half a year – it bonded us together. Especially in that phase of the PhD, when you don’t have a permanent institution that you belong to, and basically, you don’t have a community. So, meeting in this small seminar, with people who shared very similar political views, created a small community for me. She, in particular, was weaving something for each of us.

She made portraits of the women that we were talking about. Some of them were recognisable, some of them weren’t. Each person received a gift like that. I think it’s pretty, I’m carrying it around. Whenever I take a glimpse at it, I kind of feel more comfortable, and it reminds me I have a sort of little community to come back to.
