Who we are
The Outcast Europe website is run by the non-profit organisation Inter Alia, and gives access to content and metadata related to migratory and refugee experiences, including the digital copies of the material objects collected during the homonymous project, which was co-financed by the programme Europe for Citizens of the European Union, and sponsored by the Greek Ministry of Culture and Sports.
What personal data we collect and why we collect it
When you contribute content and metadata to the Outcast Europe website via the Story Submission Form, Inter Alia processes your name and surname, email address, your story and any other information related to your personal or familial migratory and/or refugee experiences that you share with Inter Alia. This information is processed with your consent and is used to assess and publish your contribution to the website.
When you leave comments on the website, Inter Alia collects the data shown in the comments form, and also the user’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection. An anonymised string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.
When you visit the website, Inter Alia may process technical data of your device used, such as the IP address and your browsing activity. This information is processed on the basis of Inter Alia’s legitimate interests to continue to improve the website’s functionality, efficiency and presentation.
In any case, Inter Alia may process the content of its communication (by any means) with you as well as your relationship to Inter Alia. In addition to the information listed above, Inter Alia may collect and process other types of necessary and relevant information, dependent on your relationship with Inter Alia.
If Inter Alia intends to use or share your data for purposes other than those described here, Inter Alia will inform you about this intention. Inter Alia will only use your data upon your approval and/or if it is necessary to perform agreements.

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

The Outcast Europe website uses some cookies in order to improve website experience. Embedded content from other websites
Articles on this website may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website. These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.
Who we share your data with
Inter Alia publishes your personal and/or familial story related to your migratory and/or refugee experiences on this website with your consent.
Beyond contributions to this website, Inter Alia will not share your personal data with third parties without your consent, unless Inter Alia is legally obliged to, or in case Inter Alia has contracted a third party to process personal data on behalf of Inter Alia (processors). When Inter Alia contracts the services of a processor, demands a high level of data protection standards. Processors may only process your personal data for the specific purpose for which your information is processed, on the basis of Inter Alia’s instructions.
Inter Alia may also share your personal data in response to a law enforcement request, or in case it is in the legitimate interest of yourself, Inter Alia or a third party.
If you request a password reset, your IP address will be included in the reset email.
User comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.
How long we retain your data
If you contribute content and metadata to the website, the content and metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so Inter Alia can promote further the knowledge in relation to the phenomena of migration and enforced movement.
If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so Inter Alia can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.
For users that register on the website (if any), Inter Alia also stores the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.
What rights you have over your data
Under the conditions stated in the General Data Protection Regulation and at your request, you have the following rights in respect of your personal data processed by Inter Alia:
- Access: Inter Alia will supply you with information regarding the processing of your personal data (at no cost).
- Rectification: You may rectify, complete or add a supplementary statement to your personal data.

- Withdraw consent: In the event that your personal data is processed by Inter Alia on the basis of your consent, you may withdraw your consent for further processing.
Please note that due to administrative and legal obligations, or for security purposes, Inter Alia may not be able to erase all of your personal data. When such a legal obligation or security purpose expires, then these rights may be fully exercised. You will of course be notified of this.
Inter Alia respects your privacy rights. In order to exercise your rights, please contact Inter Alia by emailing info@interaliaproject.com.
In the event that you are not satisfied by the handling of your personal data by Inter Alia, please contact Inter Alia by emailing info@interaliaproject.com and your complaint will be addressed confidentially. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Hellenic Data Protection Authority.
How we protect your data
Inter Alia takes appropriate technical and organisational security measures to protect your personal data. Access to your personal data is restricted to persons with a relevant position or assignment at Inter Alia.
As far as the website is concerned, Inter Alia uses exclusively secure connections (https) to encrypt the communication for visitors. Inter Alia also makes use of all data security measures implemented by Papaki (the hosting provider).
