Story:

Maria shares with us the mail correspondence of a good friend of hers.

She wanted to practise her English, around 30 years ago, in the ’90s, and she decided to start a correspondence. The cram school where she had English lessons gave them the opportunity to start a correspondence with people from abroad, either the UK or the USA. They would find people through the school, which would also be kids, and they would write letters to each other – Internet didn’t exist then. She started writing to a girl in the USA. So, she learned English very well, she now speaks it as her second language. They don’t have a name day there, but the girl found a Greek card there for the name day, to send it to her. My friend is now 40 years old and they still talk on Facebook. It’s a romantic story! She had also sent photographs of her cat and all these letters that my friend has kept. Her name is also Maria. The girl had also sent her handmade things. They continue to this day, it’s Greece – Saltsburg.

Maria explains that when her friend got married and changed houses, she helped her with the house move and found a box with all this material. Her friend told her she could keep it. She also mentions that she is an anthropologist and took an academic interest in the story.

I met Maria because we were studying together during my first degree, at Piraeus, Management and Finances, 20 – 25 years ago. These reached me two years ago. I live here, in Moschato, she lives in Kallithea. I see it as a romantic story.
